Blog Post #5

This is my first time blogging, and it’s harder than I imagined. It’s difficult to come up with things to write about, while making it fun and engaging for readers, an art I don’t think I’ve mastered quite yet. I do think my current experience with blogging is more difficult than that of a normal blogger. We’re given prompts that explain exactly what we need to write about. Real bloggers need to come up with their own prompts and figure out what they’re writing all on their own. So far, I enjoy blogging, I think it’s fun writing down my thoughts on certain matters, though I do think it’s challenging,

The use of AI in education settings is a new and emerging concept. With the rise of AI comes a rise in challenges for teachers. There are questions about ethics and how to incorporate it into learning and how it’s changing classrooms. AI has many potential benefits for k-12 classrooms. It can provide more personalized learning for students, create classroom activities and lessons for teachers, help students understand concepts, and more. On the other hand, there are many concerns raised by the use of AI in classrooms. It could cause heavy reliance on technology, hinder student engagement, and of course there are privacy concerns associated with it. I think AI has the potential to be very helpful in classrooms, but it could also cause major problems if not used correctly.

For the Generative AI Participation Portfolio Item, we were asked to create a lesson plan using generative AI. To do this I asked copilot to “please make a lesson plan for a 4th grade class learning about the states of matter.” Copilot created a lesson plan for me that was good, but I wanted class discussion and interactive components. This gave me a good lesson plan that I liked. The key was to be very specific and state exactly what I wanted in the lesson. Adding specific details about what I wanted helped tailor the lesson plan to my wants and needs. Next time I use generative AI I’ll do the same thing. I’ll ask the initial question and then ask for more specific stuff based on the first response they give me.

By the time I am finally a teacher, generative AI will be more and more widely used. I will have to adapt and know how to use it. It can be a very helpful tool for teachers too. I could create decorations for my classroom, like Canvas image generator. I can also use it for coming up with lesson plans. I do have to be careful using it for lesson plans though, it may not always be accurate or a good plan. Ultimately, generative AI is becoming more popular, and I will need to learn how to use it as a teacher.
